Infinity Nikki is an odd game. In a sense, it’s exactly what we need in the industry. There’s a very real risk, if we focus entirely on what sells best, that the only games developed will become carbon copies of each other. Instead, Infinity Nikki is an open-world game with a lot of similarities to things like Breath of the Wild, albeit if wearing the right frilly dress gave Link the ability to float.

Infinity Nikki begins with Nikki and her best friend, a talking cat named Momo, discovering a goddess who sends them on a journey to the land of Mira. There, they need to collect magical outfits to save the world. Combat is as simple as shooting orbs to purify your enemies (or occasionally slamming them from above), so don’t expect some massive challenge.

Until Dawn Review on PS5

Supermassive Games has carved out a niche for itself in the interactive horror movie genre, and it all started with Until Dawn. Yes, other games (like the criminally underrated ObsCure) have tried to bring the world of slasher cinema to gaming, but no game managed it quite like Until Dawn. Now, with a movie on the horizon and a sequel reportedly in the works, it might just be the perfect time to revisit the game.

Supermassive isn’t involved this time around, of course. Instead, Ballistic Moon has taken charge of development, with Sony Interactive Entertainment publishing. Don’t worry though – if you loved the original, you’ll find plenty to love here.

Silent Hill 2 Review on PS5

Horror fans are eating well this autumn, but no game has been more anticipated than the remake of Silent Hill 2. The original isn’t just among the best survival horrors ever made, but arguably among the best games, full stop. A remake was always bound to be a tall order, so does it work?

Astrobot

The cutesy platformer that took the world by storm last month opened up the stream with the announcement of a new free DLC with five new online levels with speedrunning capabilities and ten new bots to rescue. The DLC drops later this year, with more on the way.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster on PlayStation 5

Ah, Dead Rising. Has there ever been a zombie game that’s quite so much fun? Not fun in the sense that any game is fun, but fun in the sense that we all think such an apocalypse would be. Sure, realistically 90% of us would be dead in the first few days, but we all think we’d have fun doing exactly what’s done here.

Unfortunately, there are a few serious issues in the original version of Dead Rising. While it’s still a fantastic game, it’s also very much of its time. The controls are clunky by modern standards, the AI often feels like it was programmed by AI, and there are a few deeply questionable design decisions. Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster aims to modernize things, and oh boy does it succeed.

The Casting of Frank Stone on PC

Supermassive Games has a monopoly on the interactive horror movie genre. It’s a simple formula, but one that works well. You control a group of characters caught in a typical horror movie scenario, and you’ll make the decisions that will lead them to safety – or an early grave.

The Casting of Frank Stone marks the developer’s first crossover, with asymmetrical horror Dead by Daylight getting the honour. It’s a tough sell, but one that works well. Yes, the game works best if you know Dead by Daylight and can recognize the many, many easter eggs. I’ve been playing Dead by Daylight for years, and even now there are references I’m sure I missed or couldn’t place. However, even if you haven’t played Dead by Daylight, The Casting of Frank Stone does a great job of introducing you to the universe, and works well as a standalone story.

Alien is back in the spotlight. Not only has Alien: Romulus proven to be a hit at the box office, there’s a TV series and a new game in the works. Sadly, the franchise’s gaming entries haven’t always been successful, with one exception: 2014’s Alien: Isolation. Not only is this game one of the scariest entries in the entire Alien franchise, it’s got a fair claim to being the scariest game ever made. Here’s what makes Alien: Isolation work so well.

5. Tension

Any film student will tell you that a monster is scariest before we understand it. Alien understood that. The first film is easily the scariest, and part of this is due to the fact that for most of it, we don’t get more than quick glimpses of the Xenomorph.

Opening Night Live saw plenty of new reveals, but one of the most unusual was Secret Level. This new anthology series from Netflix is inspired by games, presenting us with so-called “secret levels”. These are new stories with characters from (or in the universe of) a variety of different games. We already know that there will be episodes based on the likes of God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, and even Dungeons and Dragons, but there’s plenty of space for more. Here are the top 10 games we want to see in Secret Level.

10: ObsCure

Let’s kick off with a total wildcard. This (appropriately) obscure PS2 series is overdue a revival. A Secret Level episode would be a perfect place for it to start if Amazon wants to take a left-field option.

Last Friday (August 2) saw Coach launch its first gaming efforts as part of the Find Your Courage campaign. The crossover sees Coach products appear in two Roblox titles – Fashion Klossette and Fashion Famous Two – as well as gaming/social media platform Zepeto. We were lucky enough to attend the launch event at Coach’s flagship store in New York, and talk to SVP of Global Visual Experience Gio Zaccariello and VP of Marketing Kimberly Wallengren about the collaboration and bringing fashion to Roblox.

Twinfinite: Why did you choose Roblox and Zepeto for the collaboration over any other platforms?

As more and more people worldwide are getting concerned with their digital presence, some of the world’s biggest brands are taking the opportunity to heighten their own online persona. The latest of these is renowned fashion house Coach, who launched its first gaming collaboration as part of the ongoing Find Your Courage campaign. The Shadow Hearts franchise is one of gaming’s greatest cult hits, and for good reason. Unlike the majority of RPGs, the games are set on Earth, albeit one that’s different from the one we know. Historical figures such as Mata Hari and The Grand Duchess Anastasia live alongside vampires and kung fu fighting cats, coming across demons in real-life cities is a regular occurrence, and powerful sorcerers are attempting to summon eldritch gods left, right, and center.

It’s been two whole console generations since the PS3 and Xbox 360 eras, and the generation occupies a strange middle ground. It arguably represented some of the biggest leaps in power of any console generation, but many of its games have fallen by the wayside. This is especially so for the PS3, since the console’s unique infrastructure makes emulating those games on modern consoles a tricky prospect. Beyond Good & Evil: 20th Anniversary Edition on PlayStation 5

Sometimes, it’s easy to forget just how far games have come in such a short time. It feels like we’ve been spoiled by modern gaming to the point where what came before often feels unimpressive by comparison. As such, it can be hard to judge older games or remasters on their own merits.

Even going back to revisit some of the classics, it’s amazing how clunky and unrefined they feel by comparison. Beyond Good & Evil: 20th Anniversary Edition takes one of the PS2’s hidden gems and brings it to the current generation of gaming. However, it doesn’t quite modernize the game as much as I was hoping. It feels like a PS2 game. While it’s a great PS2 game, it doesn’t feel quite as fluid as modern titles, which is somewhat to be expected.

While the interactive drama genre is nothing new, Until Dawn is arguably one of the most famous of them all. The game shot developer Supermassive Games to the top of the industry. Since its release, the company has released five other interactive horror games, with two more on the way. Until Dawn is getting a remake later this year, as well as a movie adaptation, but the recent casting announcement specified “new characters”. What does this mean for the Until Dawn movie?

A Straight Adaptation?

Until Dawn follows a group of eight students who come under attack from horrific forces while staying in a secluded mansion over the weekend. Over the course of the game, players will make decisions that determine which of the students will make it through the night, and which will die gruesomely.

Horror thrives on isolation. There’s a reason so many horror protagonists are cut off from civilization. If the police can turn up at any time, or escaping the alien menace is as simple as calling for help, it robs what’s going on of what makes it scary. A horror story has to have people facing near-impossible odds. Whether or not they survive depends on how generous the writer is.

So as soon as I loaded into the Beroa, a poorly-maintained oil rig in the North Sea, I was waiting for things to go very, very wrong.

All around the world, game developers are becoming more and more concerned with diversity. However, the queer community is often sidelined, despite the industry’s best intentions. Even when a developer makes an effort to showcase queer characters, there are several pitfalls that pop up again and again. The games industry needs to do better: here are five issues with queer representation in gaming.

The Legend of Zelda franchise is one of the most famous in gaming history, with a history spanning almost forty years. It may be hard to believe, but the game that started it all has never been remade. It’s been re-released, most recently through the NES Classic Collection. A remake would let the game stand alongside the superior games it inspired.
